An investigation continues after a 10-storey apartment building at Marquette and Beechwood avenues in the Vanier district was evacuated Tuesday morning due to elevated levels of carbon monoxide gas.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at about 9:35 a.m. after a CO detector was set off in the 120-unit building at 7 Marquette Ave.

When early examinations confirmed slightly elevated CO, hazmat specialists were deployed and responders found levels of carbon monoxide higher than 80 parts per million on some floors.

Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and poisonous. Symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure, including vomiting and nausea, become more pronounced above 70 ppm.

The building was evacuated and any evacuees were housed in an OC Transpo bus at the scene. Responders and building personnel ventilated each unit and all floors.

The site was declared safe at about noon.

An investigation to determine the cause of the CO is ongoing.
