There’s a frostbite advisory in effect from Ottawa Public Health as high winds are whipping a moderately cold day (minus-14 C) into a more bitter wind chill of minus-25 C.
The January trend continues: Rain on weekends, when you might want to ski, and snow midweek that slows the trip to work.
Ottawa recorded 8.2 centimetres of snow overnight. But the weather was blowing as much as snowing: Winds were in the range of 34 to 39 kilometres per hour through much of the night, gusting to 58 km/h.
School buses across the region were running Wednesday, but many were late.
Don’t look for the city’s much-advertised Where Is My Plow? website or phone app. It’s shut down. A notice online reads: “The City has completed initial pilot testing and analyzed the feedback for the Where Is My Plow web tool, and is now making adjustments to the tool. As a result it will not be available for this weather event.”
And the snow will continue on and off for the rest of the week. There are flurries forecast for every day (or night) through Monday, but there’s no prediction of a major snowfall.
There’s also no sign of a thaw in the long-range forecast. That includes the Weather Network, which offers a 14-day forecast ending Jan. 27.
Environment Canada lists the normal high and low for this time of year is minus-6 C and minus-16 C.
The days are getting longer by a minute-and-a-half each day. Ottawa has gained 20 minutes of daylight since the shortest day of December.
