It’s a week celebrating the immeasurable impact, life and artistic creations of iconic performer David Bowie, who died on Sunday after a quiet battle with cancer. It struck me how, while sorting through the gigs on offer this week with Bowie on permanent loop in the background and reading every possible tribute — through some tears, we will admit — his music is accessible to all musical genres.

So, as part of a personal homage to the transformative man, we are offering the songs we think our musical picks of the week should cover at their gigs. (Of course, these are only suggestions and we are sure the musicians have their own favourites in their repertoire — with Rebel Rebel seeming to be popular.)

RIP, Mr. Jones, and thank you.

Life on Mars / John, I’m Only Dancing: First, party host Remi Royale is holding a Bowie Tribute Party/pre-arranged karaoke event at the Manx on Sunday at 11 p.m. Expect a package pub, tears and impromptu singalong — with costumes encouraged. Jan. 17, 11 p.m, 370 Elgin St.

TV 15 / Suffragette City / Ziggy Stardust: Local slide-guitarist Paul Fenton, who performs with his band Bone at The Black Sheep Inn on Jan. 16, has said they will perform an original song previously played with guitarist Mick Ronson, who famously recorded with David Bowie. (Ronson, Fenton said, shared some Bowie stories with him that may be revealed on Friday.)

This might be one of the last chances to see Bone, a band which plays “85 per cent originals” inspired by the rock-blues sounds of the 60’s and 70’s, as Fenton is taking a trip to Nashville soon to see if he can get something started there — “even if only for the winters.”

“It’s very hard for a local band to play constantly nowadays,” in Ottawa due to a lack of venues, said Fenton, adding he feels sorry for young people starting off. “They never get a chance to hone their chops on stage because there aren’t enough gigs.”

Bone are headlining the show, but playing first, and are being followed by Generation Moon, a The Who tribute band who promise 70’s era attire and instruments and a rock opera experience. Jan. 16, 8:30 p.m., The Black Sheep Inn. Tickets: $10 in advance. theblacksheepinn.com

Changes / As The World Falls Down: Britain’s celebrated London Haydn Quartet performs music of 18th Centuy Vienna with clarinettist Eric Hoeprich at 7 :30 p.m., but only after early music specialist Ann Monoyios reveals details of the composers in a free talk at 6 p.m. Jan. 14, National Gallery. Tickets for the concert only: $29-$47. chamberfest.com

I’m Afraid of Americans / Let’s Dance: Ottawa’s hip hop duo Buck-N-Nice, inspired by 90’s rap and about to take their exploding national popularity internationally, are at Zaphod’s with their latest single ahead of the release of their sophomore album — expected sometime soon.

They are joined by local, experimental hip hop group wotts., whose recent EP is an eclectic mix of beatbox ear-worms, with an infectious R&B tone but, dare we say, with background subtlety influenced by jazz smoothness. This EP has the sophisticated timbre and exploration of an early-career, established group, not young bucks desperate to make a mark. Fans of the genre — and anyone else they know, should hit this gig. Jan. 14, 8 p.m., Zaphod Beeblebrox, 27 York St. Tickets: $5. zaphods.ca

Girl Loves Me / Soul Love: We head into the sky with Rakestar, the saxophone and percussion heavy collective of musicians who play the cosmic jazz of Sun Ra, controversial American improviser and composer who claimed he originated from Saturn. He explored jazz in all its forms, adding a psychedelic and science fiction twist which, after his death in 1993, was coined Afrofuturism. Rakestar are forming from the darkness again, and returning to their original venue, Mercury Lounge (where else?), with members Linsey Wellman, David Broscoe, Jon Sobol, Rob Frayne, Mike Essoudry, Scott Warren, Jamie Gullickson, Rory Magill and others. Jan. 14, 8 p.m., Mercury Lounge. Tickets: $5 at the door.

Absolute Beginners / Modern Love / Sound and Vision: There’s a fuzz, power pop expo at House of Targ with new fave, Toronto’s duo Twist — think Patsy Cline meets Nancy Sinatra via The Velvet Underground — whose naîf, pared-down vocals with smart riffs have garnered notice (and should be included on the Twin Peaks revival soundtrack). They are joined by London’s So Young and Ottawa’s Trails. Jan. 15, 8 p.m., Pressed Tickets: $7 at the door, but also pay-what-you-can.

Hang On To Yourself / Cat People: Punk gets a work through in this lineup at House of Targ, starting with pop-punk (with surfbeat influence) from Ottawa’s Neck, Vankleek Hill’s Audio Visceral gives us a garage guitar riffs, Toronto’s Fandemics bring the rock and roll and Quarter Tank, also from Toronto, bring the loud and angry. Jan. 15, 10 p.m., House of Targ, 1077 Bank St. Tickets: $6. houseoftarg.com

Looks Back in Anger / The Man Who Sold The World: Thrash speed metal DBC (Dead Brain Cells), who toured a bit in the 80’s and now seem to gig when the mood strikes them around Montreal, are headlining a high-speed metal show, with Mutank, Ominius Eclipse, Entrenched on Sunday, to the glee of local fans. Jan. 16, 10 p.m., House of Targ, 1077 Bank St. Tickets: $13 in advance. houseoftarg.com

There are two post-secondary student-focussed events on Jan. 16:

China Girl /Life on Mars: At Frost 2016, those aged 17 years and over can party at the Aberdeen Pavilions with sweet-voiced ILoveMakonnen, who skyrocketed to global attention after his song Tuesday was remixed by the Toronto-loving Drake star in 2014. (He may also have may also have been some mention by Miley Cyrus and some music pundits, too.)

Not to be overlooked on the lineup, is hip hop producer DJ Mustard who is known for his danceable, feel good creations: “… have fun and get home safe,” he has has said. (There’s a new video out for his heavily AutoTuned song with Travis Scott.) Jan. 16, 8 p.m., Aberdeen Pavilion, Lansdowne Park. Tickets: $23.80-$59.50+. wanttickets.com

Valentine’s Day / Jump They Say / Heroes: The very popular Rep Your Flag EDM party is spreading from Montreal to the EY Centre on Saturday, encouraging everyone to haul out their country’s flag, traditional outfits, club outfits to represent! Party mixers R3HAB and Domeno will follow a set by Barrhaven duo MAC — who will be on a party bus ($15) before and after their show, with pick ups at four spots around town. Jan. 16, 10 p.m,. EY Centre. Tickets: $27.50-$35 in advance. dnalive.ca
