Etheleen Stanzel comes by her nickname, the “Queen of Riverview,” legitimately.
The lifelong resident of Carleton Place worked for years as a caterer there, then for a long time worked as a volunteer at the Lake Avenue institution.
In fact, her late father-in-law, Stephen William Stanzel, built a large section of the residence in the early 1900s. (The Stanzel wing has been declared a community heritage site).
So the regal reception was legitimate Saturday when Stanzel arrived at a party in the Riverview’s main hall to celebrate her 100th birthday, which was Thursday.
Celebrants included her son, Bob, who described her as “kind, considerate, compassionate, caring” in his speech, and sister Audrey, 86, as well as Carleton Place Mayor Louis Antonakos and his deputy Jerry Flynn, who spoke in Stanzel’s honour.

Flynn said he has known Etheleen Stanzel since he was born.
“My mom and Etheleen catered together, they played cards together, they were very, very close friends.”
Antonakos presented a plaque in congratulations of Stanzel’s birthday on behalf of the town of Carleton Place. The centenarian also received birthday wishes from Gov. Gen. David Johnston, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Kathleen Wynne and a number of MPs.
Stanzel kept her own remarks to a minimum but, when asked about her secret to living a long life, she exclaimed, “Eat!”
And, while she was happy to see her human visitors, two of her favourite party guests were the residence’s therapy dogs, two young golden retrievers, Dugan and Sadie.
Susan Brandt, co-owner of the residence, brings her dogs to see the residents every week.
“Etheleen loves them and actually all of the residents absolutely love them; we bring them here as often as we can.”
Brandt added the dogs are usually rambunctious, but they calm down around the residents.
“They were afraid of her walker at first, but they got over it very quickly and she just loves them.”
