In a recent study of three popular forms of investments, the exclusive Hermès Birkin bag beat out gold and the S&P 500 stock.
The latter was chosen as it represents the overall return characteristics of the stock market as a whole. Gold, meanwhile, is considered the most popular commodity for investors and Birkin bags are a collectible and tangible investment.
You may remember it from Sex and The City.
“It’s not a bag, it’s a Birkin,” the Samantha character was told before being informed about a five-year wait list for the coveted purse.
“The waiting list implemented by Hermès for a Birkin bag, sometimes as long as six years, has also contributed to driving the resale value of Birkin bags upwards with bags regularly selling on the secondary market for more than their original price,” said the findings from Bag Hunter.
People have gotten creative in the past to get their hands on the status symbol. A couple of customers admitted they just kept buying things at Hermès until a salesperson deemed them “worthy” enough to own the bag.
There’s even a book called “Bringing Home the Birkin: My Life in Hot Pursuit of the World’s Most Coveted Handbag” that was published in 2009.
Of course, getting one is no problem for celebrities who are regularly seen flaunting their Birkins.
Kanye West even encouraged his daughter to paint on one as a present for wife Kim Kardashian.
In 2012, Clint Eastwood’s daughter Francesca received death threats after shedestroyed a $100,000 red crocodile Birkin with a chainsaw and gasoline for aphotoshoot.
In a 2015 Fortune magazine article titled “Why a $223,000 Hermes Birkin bag might actually be a good investment,” the entry price was estimated to be $12,000 USD (just over $17,000 CAD now).
In the latest study, researchers compared how the value of gold, the stock and the purse changed over a period of 35 years, which is how long the Birkin has been around.
Of the three, it is the only one to increase in value year over year, offering an average annual increase in value of 14.2 per cent.
“Unlike the S&P 500 and gold markets, the value of Hermès Birkin handbags has never fluctuated downwards and has steadily and consistently increased.”
The bags experienced a peak surge in value in 2001, increasing in value by 25 per cent, and with the lowest increase in 1986 when the value went up by 2.1 per cent.
S&P 500, on the other hand, returned a real return average of 8.65 per cent between 1980 and 2015. That doesn’t take the fluctuation of the markets into account. In 2008, the stock reached an average low of -36.55 per cent.
“During the same period of time, gold has offered an average annual return of 1.9 per cent which equates to a real return average of -1.5 per cent. Once again the averages do not take into account the fluctuation of the price of gold during this period.”
Gold reached it peak average in 2011 at $1,571.52 and an average low of $271.04 in 2001.
The study concludes by saying investing in S&P 500 or in gold brings a huge amount of risk.
“In comparison, an investment in a Hermès Birkin bag has shown to be safe and steady over the last 35 years, with all current indicators showing that this trend is set to continue.
“In 2016, the safest and least volatile investment market of the three is certainly Hermès Birkin handbags.”
A similar study was done that found Lego is also a more sound investment than gold or stocks.
Ed Maciorowski, founder of BrickPicker.com, told The Telegraph in December that the top price would be fetched only if the Lego had been kept in its box, in perfect condition.
“Used Lego is less valuable, but can still be worth hundreds of pounds more than its original price.”
No word on how Lego would stack up against a Birkin.
