A week before Parliament reconvenes, Outaouais MPs gathered with area stakeholders on Tuesday to discuss how they will move forward under the Liberal government’s 10-year, $124-billion infrastructure spending plan.
Gatineau MP Steven MacKinnon — along with Pontiac MP William Amos, Hull-Aylmer MP Greg Fergus and Stéphane Lauzon, who represents Argenteuil-La Petite-Nation — held pre-budget consultations with 26 groups, including representatives from regional governments.
“We have obviously inherited an economic realty that is that is somewhat anemic, but I think the message we want to send today is we can be optimistic about Canada, and we can be optimistic about the kinds of investments we are planning to make in our economy,” said MacKinnon. “And the Liberal plan as presented last October is exactly the plan that is required to get us through this turbulence.”
In recent weeks, the MPs have met with dozens of mayors who have pitched projects to be funded. The challenge will be to prioritize and decide which proposal will benefit their communities most.
“I think what you do first is listen. You need to understand what the full spectrum of infrastructure opportunities are,” said Amos. “And we are not just going to stop with this consultation here. This is an infrastructure plan that is going to be rolled out over several years. So we are in listening mode now and we will continue to be in listening mode.”
Projects on his radar include social housing in Gracefield, and there might be discussion about a rails-to-trails project for active transport in Chelsea.
Given that many public servants live in Hull-Aylmer, Fergus is concerned about upcoming negotiations, as well as the integration of immigrants and transportation issues west of Aylmer, to name a few.
Lauzon said rural constituents want better cellphone and Internet access. As well, he said, the revitalization of the historic Grenville Canal across the Ottawa River from Hawkesbury, Ont., will be a priority.
The ideas collected will be submitted to the Finance Minister Bill Morneau as he prepares the 2016-17 budget.
