So long, Eugene.
This is the week we say goodbye to Eugene Haslam who, as owner and creator of iconic venue Zaphod Beeblebrox for several decades has provided us with a space to dance every night of the week, a stage where our bands could play, awesome bar staff and with a bias-free space (before it was trendy).
So, on Wednesday, pretend work was not exhausting and the joints are not creaking and join the young(er) fans in giving thanks and wishing him well on the next chapter. In his tradition of giving bands a chance before they became famous (think The Sheepdogs, Hot Hot Heat, Matt Mays), the best from Zaphod’s recent new music showcases will perform tonight. We’re told this tradition will continue under the new owners.
It might be a good idea to buy tickets in advance and not just rock up hoping to get in on this seminal day. So long, Eugene, and thanks for all the
Before leaving the helm, Haslam made sure to book The Julian Taylor Band in for a gig — “… because of how hard he works at his craft. He’s good.” Ottawans of a certain age will remember Taylor as the frontman of Toronto band Staggered Crossing (StagX to its fans) who found favour in our city with their rocking tunes and energetic performances. The lineup has changed and the songs are different but their unabashedly, feel-good music grounded in rhythm-and-blues are elevated by their leave-everything-on-the-stage performances. (Blue Jays fans will recognize the band’s song Just a Little Bit which is in constant rotation at their stadium.) Jan. 23, 8 p.m., Zaphod’s. Tickets: $12 in advance. zaphods.ca
One half of Canadian hip hop team Swollen Members, Madchild, is in town mere weeks after his rival, Snak the Ripper. The two B.C.-based rappers had been slinging diss tracks on their YouTube channels and nasty tweets at each other for months, though their promoter has said the level of threats being lobbed by their fans led to them “taking the adult road” and cooling down the venom, if not ending the war.
Madchild’s third solo album, Silver Tongue Devil, released this past summer stays with his distinctive gothic tone and wit, though surprisingly moves into more prurient topics, sliding back into a misogyny we thought had lost favour. He performs with support from Prehistoric, Proper T, Drae, C-Note, Cleerouse, Swift Crew. Jan.. 21, 9 p.m., Babylon. Tickets: $25-$40. ticketscene.ca
Music geeks and/or those who want to have their minds expanded beyond the typical pop formula have four shows to take in this week, starting with Ottawa New Music Creators’ first gig of the season, a fully-improvised performance by Pierre-Yves Martel on viola de gamba and Ben Grossman on hurdy gurdy.
The virtuoso duo are known for mind-altering performances, pulling modern, adventurous and electro-like sounds from the ancient instruments. Jan. 22, 7:30 p.m., Gallery Recording Studios, Ecclesiax Church, 2 Monk St. Tickets: $10. http://bit.ly/1V2mvyO
Even the jazz-averse will enjoy The Eric St. Laurent Trio who, with guitar, percussion and upright bass, use Afro-Cuban rhythms and a deep understanding of the visceral effect of sound to create a jazz experience that is both sincere and moving, while remaining whimiscal. However, do not go to this gig expecting the satisfying completion of a Top 40 tune. Jan. 22, 7:30 p.m., GigSpace. Tickets: $20. www.gigspace.ca
The musical theme is surreal Jewish at The Black Sheep Inn on Friday, with headliner Geoff Berner, who combines klezmer and the ridiculous with a punk sensibility, and Montreal’s Orkestar Kriminal, who proudly play the Yiddish and evocative gangster folk music of the between-war underworld of Warsaw, Odessa, Greece and anywhere else they fancy, (expect to hear about eight different languages at this performance), Jan. 22, 8 p.m. Tickets: $10 in advance. theblacksheepinn.com
Toronto’s 2105 Polaris prize shortlisted innovative group BADBADNOTGOOD seem to be gigging a fair bit in Ottawa (not surprising, since one of its four members, Chester Hansen, went to Canterbury before the three met at Humber College), when not at Hillside, or Chicago’s Lollapalooza or the Glastonbury Festival — which is good for us. The now three-year-old band do jazz with hip hop, funk, rap and roots essence, collaborating with urban artists here, electronica there, creating something new and very crowd pleasing. See them with Busty and the Bees. (Interestingly, it seems only one of the members stayed enrolled at Humber, “…only for the dental plan.”) Jan. 22, 8 p.m., Algonquin Commons Theatre. Tickets: $13.50-$23.50. http://goo.gl/5Afieb
Last check, there were still tickets available for Ottawa’s blues party band Monkeyjunk show at the Rainbow on Saturday (9 p.m.,$15), but do not fret if they sell out (which they probably will). Local purveyors of shakin’-it, soul movers the Mackenzie Rhythm Section and the disco funk fiends The Ven Dreddies will be heating everything up at the House of Targ. Jan. 23, 10 p.m. Tickets: $10. houseoftarg.com
For something from The Rock, the Atlantic Voices community choir will be singing old-time songs from Newfoundland taken from the Gerald S. Doyle Collection, a business (from King’s Cove, of course) from the early 20th century who compiled the still-seminal books of the area’s folksongs. Jan. 23, 2 p.m., Centretown United Church, 507 Bank St. Tickets: $15 in advance, $20 at the door, free for children 12 years and under. www.atlanticvoices.ca
Then on Sunday, Scottish poet Robbie Burns’ 257th birthday will be celebrated a day in advance (his birthday is on the 25th) at an all-ages show of traditional music from Bobby Watt and Ecosse — with a side of haggis and all the trimmings at The Black Sheep Inn. Jan. 24, 4 p.m. Tickets: $20 in advance. theblacksheepinn.com
