Gatineau police have caught a super-speeder who now faces criminal charges plus thousands of dollars in traffic fines.

The 32-year-old Gatineau man tried to flee at a top speed that was 110 kilometres an hour over the limit Wednesday.

It started when the man, who later was found not to have a driver’s licence, was clocked at 55 km/h in a 30 km/h zone on boulevard des Hautes-Plaines in the north end of Hull.

When an officer tried to pull him over, he did a U-turn and stomped on the gas to get away.

The pursuit didn’t last long, but Gatineau police were able to record his top speed with a laser gun as he reached 140 km/h, still in a 30 km/h zone.

The man tried to escape on foot after he stopped the car but was caught by officers. Police have not released his name.

The price of his race from the law:

• Fines totalling $3,489.

• He loses his Toyota RAV4 for 30 days.

• 34 demerit points are placed on his driving record (which would result in a licence suspension, if he had one).

• On top of all that he will face criminal charges for dangerous driving, fleeing police, obstructing police, and possession of cannabis.
