An “aggressive” German shepherd was recovering in a veterinary clinic Sunday after being shot a day earlier by an Ottawa police officer who considered it a threat to pedestrians, including a baby in a stroller.

“The dog is in stable condition,” Natalie Pona, spokeswoman for the Ottawa Human Society, said late Sunday afternoon, explaining that the owner “surrendered” the bitch to the veterinary clinic after the shooting. “We are working with the clinic to ensure she gets the care she needs. She is being treated with pain management and is being monitored.”

She said the animal is to be turned over to the human society on Monday.

The dog was shot at about 4 p.m. Saturday after police received numerous calls regarding a highly aggressive dog attempting to attack pedestrians in the area of Beausoleil Drive and York Street.

An officer arrived at the scene to find the unleashed dog with its jaws clamped on the covered arm of a pedestrian, Insp. Mark Patterson said Sunday. The officer was able to distract the dog sufficiently for the person to break away. However, with others in the area — an elderly woman was walking past and a baby was in a stroller nearby — and lacking other immediate ways to subdue the animal, the officer used his service weapon, firing a single shot into the dog’s upper torso.

“It’s unfortunate that the officer had to fire but, given the danger the animal presented, he had little choice,” Patterson said. “When you have a dog on the loose, that’s not leashed and is deemed highly dangerous, and is already attacking people, public safety is paramount. In a situation like this, where your options are limited, you can’t take chances.”

Patterson said the officer arranged to have the animal taken to an emergency veterinary clinic as soon as possible after the shooting.

The dog’s owner was not present at the scene when the animal became aggressive, Patterson said. He said he was not aware of anyone goading the animal into aggressive behaviour and said there was “no criminal aspect” to the incident.

The owner has relinquished control of the German shepherd and the matter has been turned over to the city bylaw office.
