The Ottawa Taxi Union is taking its Uber gripes to Parliament Hill next Tuesday.
“We think the big boys should get involved,” union president Amrik Singh said Thursday.
“You can’t allow a foreign company come to Canada and show their middle finger to every city hall.”
Ottawa cabbies have targeted most of their Uber-related protests at City Hall, since the municipality is the regulator for taxis. The city is reviewing the taxi bylaw to see if alternative ride-sharing services, like Uber, should be rolled into the regulatory system.
Cabbies, meanwhile, have been pushing the city to keep Uber out and, in fact, charge drivers for operating illegally.
Under the current bylaw, Uber is considered a bandit taxi service and the drivers can be fined for not having proper taxi permits.
The union has invited cabbies from other cities to participate in the Feb. 2 demonstration on Parliament Hill. Singh said he is expecting a few hundred people, noting cabbies would probably rather be on the road making money than protesting.
The protest won’t cause headaches for motorists in downtown Ottawa, he said.
“We’re not interested in inconveniencing the public,” Singh said. The union is directing cabbies to park their cars at Donald Street and North River Road and board buses to the Hill.
One union flyer suggesting “action may be taken against those who are absent” was done by a rogue member and was not endorsed by the union executive, Singh said.
“We are investigating how that leaked,” he said, noting the union-endorsed flyer to members doesn’t make threats.
He said the union doesn’t have a mechanism to discipline its own members.
