The Ottawa police major crime unit has charged a Kanata man with trying to kill his wife with a hammer after a brutal attack at the couple’s home on Tuesday morning.
Sanjay Sharma is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in what police believe was a partner assault that began at the Sharma home on Clydesdale Avenue in the Bridlewood neighbourhood Tuesday.
Police allege Sharma hit his wife, Sharmila Sharma, over the head with a hammer multiple times and then drove her to the hospital. An emergency-room doctor saw the serious injuries and would not accept the woman’s insistent story that she had fallen. The doctor then asked if she was a victim of domestic violence and then alerted police. Police have no record of any history of alleged abuse in the relationship. Sharma has no criminal record.
Sharma appeared in court Wednesday and is next scheduled to appear in court Feb. 1.
