Canada’s top military brass jumped from national defence to hockey offence as it tried to score its way through a fundraising hockey game Thursday afternoon that raised $4,330 for the Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) – National Capital Region.
The Commando Challenge IV saw general officers and flag officers (known as the ad hoc GOFO team), led by Canada’s chief of defence staff, Gen. Jon Vance, once again take on the Esprit de Corps Commando team at the University of Ottawa rink. The game marked the first time retired general Tom Lawson, the former chief of defence staff, laced up as a Commando.

The Commandos won, five to two.
No hard feelings, though. “It was great,” Vance told Around Town at the post-game pub party, where tired but happy players, their wives and sponsors mingled over beer and pizza.
The GOFOs, which include foreign military attachés, don’t play much as a team. “We sort of come together two or three times a year,” said Vance. “So, all those great memories of college hockey and stuff come floating back.
“I think we acquitted ourselves well,” he added. “We worked really hard. The Commandos did a great job; I tip my hat to them. They’ve got some great players.”
In the crowd were well-known philanthropist and honorary colonel Dave Smith, helping to pass out the free hot dogs left over from the game, and The Army Voices Choir. It performed the National Anthem in the arena and sang popular war time songs at the reception.
The fundraiser is organized by Scott Taylor, publisher and editor of the Esprit de Corps Canadian Military Magazine. He was presented the Commando Hockey Challenge Game trophy by Vance, who had another honour for Lawson: the Benedict Arnold Award. It’s to mark the first time in the series that “one of our very own” went to the other side, he said.

“What I’ve always looked forward to winning, ladies and gentleman,” Lawson said, as he accepted his award with a big smile.
Funds raised will assist the MFRC with the programming and services it offers to local military families to help them deal with their demanding military lifestyle. Issues can include the effects of separation caused by deployments and training, and the toll that repeated and frequent moves can have on military children.
