Ottawa Art Gallery supporters came together Thursday for a VIP reception announcing the latest gift of $100,000 – this time from local couple Chris Turnbull and Mary Ann Turnbull — toward the gallery’s capital fundraising campaign to finally create the new and expanded space it’s been sorely lacking.

Chris Turnbull, with his wife Mary Ann Turnbull nearby, addressed the room at a VIP reception held at the OAG Annex Gallery on Thursday, January 28, 2016, for their announced gift of $100,000 toward the Ottawa Art Gallery’s capital campaign.

The money from the Turnbulls will specifically be used to help the gallery create an art studio for programming aimed at inspiring artistic innovation and creativity in students and youth.

“We all know the value of art in children’s development,” Mary Ann Turnbull, founder of the private elementary Turnbull School and its former director, told the crowd at the OAG Annex Gallery, located inside City Hall. “Art is a wonderful sense of expression of creativity and emotions, and it can develop a contemplative and keen sense of observation in the growing minds of our children.

(Cue the sound of a squeal from her baby grandson in the audience) “And our grandchildren,” she added affably.

“Even if we don’t become artists ourselves (which is the case for most of us), through strong arts education we learn how to appreciate art, to reflect on our humanity, our culture, our history. Art is a quiet endeavor in an increasingly busy world.”

Speakers included Mayor Jim Watson, who emphasized the importance of investing in the arts in order to attract greater talent to Ottawa. A bigger and better OAG, he said, will create a cultural hub that’ll bring more visitors to the downtown core. “You are going to be very, very proud when this facility opens in 2017, which is, of course, Canada’s 150th birthday,” said Watson.

Mayor Jim Watson, joined by budding young artists from the Turnbull private elementary school, spoke at a VIP reception held at the OAG Annex Gallery held Thursday, January 28, 2016, to announce the $100,000 major gift by Chris and Mary Ann Turnbull toward the Ottawa Art Gallery’s capital campaign.

The mayor attended with city councillors Mathieu Fleury, Catherine McKenney and Jean Cloutier. Also on hand was the gallery’s director and CEO, Alexandra Badzak, as well as lawyer and former board member Tom Houston, who’s on the campaign committee. Its $3.5-million campaign, launched last September, has passed the $2-million mark.

There was a youthful presence of budding artists from Turnbull School, now led by Gareth Reid. The students’ artwork, inspired by the gallery’s impressive and massive Firestone Collection of Canadian Art, was on display. Special guests included Barbara Ann MacMahon-Firestone, wife of the late Canadian art collector, O.J. Firestone.

This is the second $100,000 donation announced in recent months. A similar gift was made late last year by lawyer Lawson Hunter, chair of the OAG board.
