At least 62 women who were staying at a women’s shelter needed another place to get warm after a fire damaged the downtown building early Saturday morning.

Ottawa Fire Services said heavy, black smoke was visible on the top floor when their crews arrived just after 2:36 a.m. at the four-storey building at 172 O’Connor St. Firefighters believe the fire began in a bedroom on the fourth floor.

The tenants of the shelter were evacuated into an OC Transpo bus while firefighters battled the blaze, which was under control by 3 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

Initially, firefighters thought only 20 of the residents of the shelter would need to be displaced while the extent of damage to the building was assessed. However, the Red Cross, which provides shelter for those affected by fires, determined all 62 residents of the shelter would need to be housed elsewhere for at least the weekend, said fire services.

Damage was initially estimated at $100,000. Both police and fire services continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

No roads were closed to traffic in the area Saturday morning.
