Students from about a dozen Canadian engineering programs hit the hills hard Saturday for the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan race at Edelweiss, near Wakefield, Que.
Created in Alberta in 1974, the project involves designing and building a toboggan on a metal frame, with a running surface made completely out of concrete.
The sled must weigh less than 350 pounds, have a working braking system, and be fitted with a roll bar to protect its five-person crew. The roll bar came in handy for at least two crews, whose sleds performed dramatic rollovers down the hill.
Technical reports on each sled were presented at a special exhibition at the Ottawa Conference Centre Friday.
