If you’re a diehard Downton Abbey fan, chances are you’re growing anxious as the beloved PBS costume drama series draws to a close. Don’t fret, because well before that sad conclusion Lord and Lady Grantham would be delighted to have you for afternoon tea at their sprawling English estate.

Well, all right, the grand farewell event takes place much closer to home. The “estate” will be the Woodroffe United Church on Saturday, Feb. 6. Expect a most proper occasion with assorted fancy sandwiches, enticing desserts and, of course, tea brewed to please aristocratic palates.

Wondering what the future holds for personal servants Anna and Bates? Perhaps you’re more interested in gossip about life upstairs. Will the widowed Lady Mary find happiness as her privileged way of life vanishes? Perhaps you will learn the truth while chatting with an esteemed table guest.

You might choose to have your photo taken with the Dowager Countess of Grantham, brilliantly played in the TV series by Maggie Smith.

It’s also a fine opportunity for guests to arrive wearing a period hat, a fascinator or even a full outfit. Costumes are optional and you may opt to represent the “upstairs” class, or the “downstairs” cast of maids, housekeepers or other staff.

Enjoy live music, costume and door prizes, tea trivia and more. There will be two sittings: 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.; and 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $20, advance ticket sales only. Contact joanconrod@bell.net, www.woodroffeunited.org, or call 613-722-9250.

Proceeds from the event are in support of a recently arrived Syrian refugee family.

The church is at 207 Woodroffe Ave. North, near Carlingwood Shopping Centre.
