Ottawa paramedics and firefighters were called after three teens fell through the ice on the Rideau River near Vimy Memorial Bridge Tuesday afternoon.

The threesome were walking on the ice just north of the bridge, which connects Strandherd Drive in Barrhaven and Earl Armstrong Road in Riverside South, at about 4:30 p.m. when they broke through the ice and were plunged into the frigid water.

Someone spotted them and called the fire department. However, they didn’t need rescuing as they’d managed to haul themselves up onto the west shore of the river, where rescuers found them wet and cold.

One of the youths needed to be treated for “mild hypothermia,” said paramedic spokesman J.P. Trottier. “We had to warm him up.”
