The creative mind of a young Ottawa boy will be showcased on retailer Ikea’s shelves around the world.
A drawing of a happy sun by the Ottawa six-year-old, identified by Ikea only as “Leonard,” was among 10 designs selected from thousands of submissions globally to be transformed into plush toys as part of the chain’s Good Cause Campaign.
This is the second year Ikea has invited children to design a special, limited-edition soft toy collection for the campaign that supports children’s play in vulnerable communities.
The winners were chosen from more than 52,000 drawings — many inspired by dinosaurs, birds and monsters — submitted by children between the ages of five and nine. Other winning entries came from Egypt, France and Hong Kong.
“Ikea received tens of thousands of drawing submissions from around the world and we are thrilled that a winner from Canada has been selected,” Stefan Sjöstrand, president of Ikea Canada, said in a press release. “This campaign not only inspires creativity and imagination, but allows children from around the world to make a global impact to encourage children’s rights to play.”
For every toy sold between Nov. 20 and Dec. 24, the Ikea Foundation will donate $1 to support children’s rights to play, develop and have fun.

Ottawa’s Ikea staff joined Léonard, 6, whose last name was not disclosed, to celebrate his winning entry.
