A cement plant operator in Wendover, Ont., has been fined $60,000 after a worker was injured when he was caught in the moving conveyer belt of a mobile crushing plant.

The incident happened Dec. 18, 2014 at a quarry operated by Colacem Canada Inc. on Route 25, east of Wendover. According to the Ministry of Labour, the worker was trying to clear a buildup of mud when the hammer he was using got stuck and pulled into a rotating roller, dragging the worker along with it.

A coworker stopped the conveyer belt and called 911. The extent of the man’s injuries aren’t known.

On Wednesday, Colacem appeared in a court in L’Orignal and pleaded guilty to failing to ensure a fence or a guard was in place to protect workers from moving parts.

The company was fined $60,000 and had to pay a 25-per-cent victim surcharge.
