Police are asking for the public’s help to identify a shoplifter who waved a knife at employees of a downtown Ottawa drugstore.

Staff saw a man concealing items in the cosmetics area of the store in the 100 block of Bank Street at about 3 p.m. on Jan. 19, police said Thursday. Confronted, the man produced a large knife and a brief struggle took place, during which some items were dropped.

Employees followed the man outside and he again brandished the knife before fleeing on Kent Street, police said.

The suspect is white, about 35 to 45 years old, five-feet-seven to five-feet-10 (170-178 centimetres) and 150 pounds (68 kilograms) with “scruffy” facial hair. He wore sunglasses, a white knitted tuque, dark winter jacket, jeans and white sneakers.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police robbery unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5116, or Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477.
