Gas prices in Ottawa have dropped to a level not seen since 2008, according to a petroleum analyst.
Dan McTeague, a senior petroleum analyst with Gasbuddy.com, said the average price in Ottawa has hit 67.9 cents per litre, which is great news for consumers but could drive independent gas stations out of town.
Major oil companies that are also refiners are selling gas below cost, which independent gas stations can’t compete with, McTeague said.
“The only ones that can survive this are the ones with deep pockets,” McTeague said.
Independent gas stations need to sell gas above cost to cover their operating costs, he said.
