Jade Lamothe stood solemnly outside the fence surrounding Parliament Hill, holding a picture of a lion, representing Cecil, the rare black-maned lion trophy hunted by a U.S. dentist in Zimbabwe last summer.

About a dozen members of the Ottawa Animal Defense League joined Lamothe Saturday afternoon to protest trophy hunting – hunting wild game with the sole intent of stuffing the carcass.

Ottawa was one of 30 cities participating in the Worldwide Rally for Cecil organized by CompassionWorks International, the first time groups met to protest an annual conference held by Safari Club International, an organization for hunting enthusiasts around the world.

Michele Thorn, the organizer of the Ottawa rally, said most of the activist groups are meeting in Las Vegas or surrounding areas to protest the conference.

“(Hunters) are paying tens of thousands of dollars each person to go on these safaris and a lot of them are actually canned hunting, which is where the animals are kept in enclosures so they can never escape.”

Canada does not escape blame in the trophy hunting business. Indeed, U.S. trophy hunters are taking advantage of the low Canadian dollar to visit a number of “high fence” hunting facilitieis in Canada.

For the ordinary consumer, Lamothe recommends people read clothing labels before buying fur items.

“It’s really hard now to be able to really tell if it’s synthetic or full fur.”

She added a lot of people don’t know the impact their clothing choices have.

“You see so many people walking their dogs wearing like dead coyote, a dead dog on them. It’s really sad. I don’t think that people are necessarily hypocrites I think they’re just uneducated.”
