Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Winterlude 2016’s final weekend as a cold front is expected to sweep through the capital region Friday night.
Extremely cold temperatures are expected in the cold front’s wake, exacerbated by gusty northwest winds.
“Very cold wind chill values of minus-35 to minus-40 are expected overnight and Saturday morning,” the agency says in the alert.
If it’s any consolation, the entire length of the Rideau Canal Skateway was expected to be open by noon Friday for the first time this season.
The last remaining blocked section, from Bank Street to Bronson Avenue, should finally be thick enough, the National Capital Commission said.
Into the weekend, the wind-chill effect is expected to be slightly better through the day Saturday, with sunny skies and a daytime high of around minus 21. The wind is expected to return Saturday night, with a low of minus 27.
Valentine’s Day Sunday is expected to be a sunny but chilly, with a high of minus 15. Temperatures should drop to around minus 20.
Family Day Monday is expected to bring a mix of sun and cloud, with a balmy high of minus 8. Forecasters predict a 30-per-cent chance of flurries and an overnight low of minus 10.
