The man believed to have shot his former partner and her father at an Almonte home this week was facing “financial pressures” but “all he wanted in life was for his family to be together,” his family says.

A statement issued Saturday night by the family of Travis Porteous, 33, describes the Carleton Place man as a loving father from a “tight knit middle class family.”

Porteus died this week in an apparent murder-suicide at the home of Bernard Cameron, 65, the father of Porteus’s former common-law partner.

Police believe Porteus arrived at the stately Almonte home and got into an argument with his former partner, Sarah, the mother of his two children.

Cameron intervened and Porteus shot the Mississippi Mills councillor and former school teacher dead, police believe.

Porteus is then believed to have shot Sarah Cameron, 28, seriously injuring her. Finally, police say, he turned the gun on himself.

Sarah Cameron remained in hospital earlier this week.

“We are in disbelief of the tragic event that unfolded,” the Porteous family wrote in their statement.
“Travis was a loving father who adored his children.”

The family said Porteous was a hard-working plumber, “but the financial pressures were real, and all he wanted in life was for his family to be together.

“Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Cameron family. And our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah, as she begins the healing proces.”

The family concluded its statement by asking for privacy.

Following is the full text of the Porteous family’s statement:

Bernard Cameron was a retired high school teacher.

We are in disbelief of the tragic event that unfolded on February 11.

Travis, 33, was a beloved father, son, brother, and grandson who will be fondly missed by many including his sister-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, co-workers, and close friends. He also loved and was loved by Aurella “Nanny Willi.”

Travis was a loving father who adored his children and they adored him. He shared custody and took responsibility for his children. He also loved his brother and spending time with his nieces.

Travis came from a hard working tight knit middle class family. Following graduation from Carleton Place High School, he studied to become a licensed plumber. He was a hard worker in the plumbing trade within the Ottawa local.

But the financial pressures were real and all he wanted in life was for his family to be together.

He shared his love of boating, fishing, and hunting with friends, cousins, his brother and dad.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Cameron family. And our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah as she begins the healing process.

We take comfort in knowing that our Travis is now in the arms of his mother Brenda. To know Travis was to love him!

Please respect our privacy during this difficult time.
