The funeral for Bernard Cameron, the popular local politician shot to death last week, will be held Friday.

Cameron, 65, a retired school teacher and councillor for Mississippi Mills, was shot and killed at his home on Strathburn Street on Thursday morning.

His daughter, 28-year-old Sarah Cameron, who with her two children was staying with her parents, was wounded. Her former common-in-law partner, Travis Porteous, whom police have identified as the shooter, killed himself at the house.

Sarah Cameron was reported to be recovering in hospital from a gunshot wound.

The crime stunned the community. Two hundred Almonte-area residents turned out Thursday at the Old Town Hall to express their shock and sorrow at the tragedy.

Sarah Cameron, while seriously injured, is reported to be recovering in hospital.

Cameron’s funeral will take place at Holy Name of Mary Parish church in Almonte at 11 a.m. on Friday.

Mississippi Mills councillors are planning a tribute and a moment of silence at Tuesday’s council meeting for their colleague, Mayor Shaun McLauglin said Sunday.
