With as much as 40 centimetres of snow expected beginning Tuesday morning, the City of Ottawa is readying its fleet for a full-scale deployment.
“This is a significant event,” said Luc Gagné, the city’s manager of roads and services. “It appears there will be more snow and it will be more intense than the storm on Dec. 29. It’s going to take a while to get all the streets cleared, but we will have all of our resources deployed and we will get around as quickly as possible.”
Gagné expects to have all 580 of the city’s snowplows, sidewalk blowers and graders at work for the storm, which is expected to push northward across the Great Lakes during the day Tuesday, bringing 20 to 40 centimetres of snow and a risk of freezing rain Tuesday afternoon.
The Dec. 29 snowfall, the last major winters storm to hit Ottawa, left some residents unhappy with the time it took for the city to clear the roads. Gagné said that this time the city will be working to improve its response time.
“We’ve ensured that we will be on top of it. We’re going to hit the storm as closely as possible. When the event starts, we will be deploying all our resources.”
For those wanting to follow the snow removal operations closely, Gagné said his team will be working on having the “Where Is My Plow” web app, which launched to mixed reviews and questions surrounding its reliability, up and running by mid- to late morning.
“We have made some changes to the messaging (function) on the Where Is My Plow. We did receive some very good feedback from the residents and we have made changes in response to that feedback,” Gagné said.
To ensure the snow removal process goes as smoothly as possible, the city asks that all residents be patient, plan ahead for longer commute times and if possible, work from home.
With the storm coming try and work from home Tues. If not leave the commute to @OC_Transpo

The arrival of the snow will provide some relief from the bone-chilling temperatures the gripped Ottawa over the weekend. Environment Canada is forecasting a high temperature of -2C for Tuesday and Wednesday.
