While police continued to investigate the Valentine’s Day death of Nicole Guimond, her friends were in mourning Monday at the loss of the popular young woman.

“I still can’t wrap my head around this,” said Becky Robinson, a longtime friend in Kingston. “She was so dear to me and so many others, every morning I would get a big hug and a hello beautiful, followed by ‘I love you so much.’ Now I just feel numb and empty and heart broken.”

Guimond, 28, was found dead in her home at 5 Creighton Dr. in Odessa, about 20 kilometres west of Kingston, around noon Sunday. Her former boyfriend, Travis Sayyeau, 24, was found in serious condition and was taken to hospital where he died a short time later.

Ontario Provincial had declined to say how Guimond or Sayyeau died pending a post-mortem examination scheduled for Tuesday.

The couple had moved to Odessa only a few months ago after having worked for some time at Summerhays Gill in Ottawa. The house in which they lived belonged to Guimond’s mother, who was travelling at the time of her daughter’s death.

While they had apparently broken off their relationship, Sayyeau was still living in the Creighton Drive house. Robinson told CBC News that Guimond was letting Sayyeau stay in the house until he could sort out his plans for the future.

Robinson, a chef at the Iguana Restaurant in Kingston where Guimond had started working in October, described her friend as always smiling and always generous.

Guimond, she wrote on Facebook, was “the most beautiful human inside and out. (She) saw the good in people and brought out the best in everyone. I am so fortunate to have had you in my life.”

The sentiment was shared by others. “We met Nikki just once, and she had a smile on her face the whole time we were there,” said Donna Rose in a Facebook posting.

“I knew Nikki well in school,” posted Natasha Goodship. “She was one of my favourite people. We live in a terrible world today. I never thought I’d ever know someone who would be taken this way.”

CBC News reported that Guimond’s current boyfriend, Ryan Beckstead, who had met the young woman a month ago had become concerned that she hadn’t responded to messages he’d left and he drove to the home to check on her. He arrived to find a crime scene.
