An Ottawa family lawyer on the run from the law after being accused of sexually assaulting a young girl has had his license to practise law revoked.

John David Coon abruptly stopped practising law and left Canada in December 2013, not long before Ottawa police secured a warrant for his arrest on charges of sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching on a child under the age of 12. Police said they had been investigating the allegations against Coon since July 2013, shortly after the alleged crime occurred.

At the time the arrest warrant was issued, police suspected the one-time criminal defence attorney had left Canada for Cambodia or Thailand. Ottawa police said Monday that the 49-year-old Coon is still wanted in relation to the sexual assault charges.

On Feb. 3, the Law Society of Upper Canada revoked Coon’s license to practise law in Ontario. According to the Law Society, Coon was found to have engaged in professional misconduct for failing to co-operate with Law Society investigations into three separate matters.

In addition to having his license revoked, Coon was ordered to pay costs of $10,170 to the Law Society.

The order summary indicates Coon was neither present or represented during his hearing.

An online biography for Coon said he was called to the Ontario Bar in 2006 and he had a combined child protection defence and criminal defence practice. The Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa said in January 2014 that Coon had withdrawn from their organization in the spring 2013.
