An Ottawa author is raising money to create a new vigilante-esque sci-fi comic book starring a superwoman taking revenge on her assailants.

This is the creation of Ottawa author Chelsi Robichaud, who believes that powerful women asserting control over their safety are not seen often enough in the comic book industry.

“Companies don’t want to release this kind of strong message,” the 23-year-old author said in an interview. “As an individual author, I have no problem speaking out about this.”

She was also inspired by the Gulabi gang, a group of women from Northern India that adopt survivors of domestic abuse into their ranks. The group’s purpose, according to its website, is to “punish oppressive husbands, fathers and brothers, and combat domestic violence and desertion.”

Iris, the comic book’s heroine, will be involved in a plot that parallels the Gulabi gang, at least in the first of eight volumes Robichaud hopes to write. The author didn’t give away the story, but said that Iris finds herself exiled, and turns to a Gulabi gang-like group to find a community that will help her take revenge.

So far, Robichaud has been surprised by the support that men are giving her project.

“The plot has a lot of feminist qualities to it, so I assumed my audience would be mostly women,” she said. “It’s been cool to see some men enjoying the project.”

Robichaud is hoping to raise $1300 through an Indiegogo campaign to hire an artist to help make her vision come to life.

“I’m dedicated to releasing this series,” she said. “It might take me a little bit longer if the campaign doesn’t work out.”

The online campaign will continue until the end of March.
