Several shots were fired at an empty fitness centre overnight Sunday, Ottawa police said.
Staff arriving at about 5:30 a.m. found bullet holes in the window of the Greco Fitness outlet on Beech Street, near Preston Street, and called police. Bullet holes were also discovered later in the ceiling of the outlet’s lobby.
On Monday afternoon, temporary glass had been installed, but broken glass could still be seen scattered around on the floor. The reception desk was covered in white dust from the ceiling tiles.
Police said the damage was caused by multiple gunshots and that no one was inside the building when the shots were fired. The exact time of the gunshots is not known.
The investigation has been turned over to the police guns and gangs unit.
Greco Fitness could not be reached for comment. The Ottawa-based chain announced on Twitter, however, that its Little Italy location would be closed Monday due to “unforeseen circumstances” and that its regular schedule would resume on Tuesday.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact investigators at 613-236-1222, ext. 5050, or through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
