Janey Adams sliced through the gusty winds Saturday in support of her son Dave Adam’s project – a new ski trail in the nation’s capital winding from Westboro Beach to the Canadian War Museum.

The whole Adams family strapped on their skis to cover the entire 16 kilometres of the Sir John A. Macdonald Winter Trail on its opening day. They were among a steady stream of skiers taking advantage of it.

Dave Adams, of Nakkertok, is the project co-ordinator and chief groomer. Nakkertok is Canada’s largest ski club and is located in Cantley, Que.

Janey paused excitedly to speak about their son’s project. She said he wanted to give the Ottawa community something to enjoy in the winter.

She and her husband, Doug Adams, were the first ones to pass. Then came the rest.

Jen Adams and husband Eric Betteridge apparently hadn’t had enough of their favourite sport after travelling 160 km in the Canadian Ski Marathon last weekend.

Asked how long she’d been skiing, “You saw my mom!” Jen Adams laughed.

“Totally pumped!” Eric Betteridge said, describing how he felt about the new route. “It looks like everyone’s smiling.”

He said it has taken a long time for the trail to become a reality.

“What brought us here was the opportunity to ski along the river on beautiful trails,” he said.

Other skiiers were just as content.

Ian Campbell, 59 said he’s happy about the condition of the new trail.

“You can see the tracks so people don’t walk on them,” he said.
