Four house fires, including two blazes believed to be the work of an arsonist, caused more than $1 million in total damage Sunday, according to estimates from Ottawa fire officials.

Following a pursuit on Highway 417 Sunday evening, Ottawa police arrested a 78-year-old man in connection with a pair of fires — one at a home at 1248 Walkley Rd. and a second at 4100 Leitrim Rd.

There were no injuries reported in either fire, but each home sustained an estimated $300,000 in structural damage.

The two-alarm blaze on Walkley began just after 9 a.m. at an abandoned home, causing an additional $25,000 to the home’s contents.

Ottawa police said the house had recently been a rooming house.

Firefighters then battled a fire believed to be related at a bungalow on Leitrim, causing an estimated $50,000 in damage to contents.

While both fires are considered suspicious and are under police investigation, firefighters were kept busy with two other unrelated fires Sunday.

A single-family row home at 382 Booth St. caught fire at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday, causing $60,000 damage to the home. The cause was determined to be accidental.

A fourth house fire at 4984 Opeongo Rd., northwest of the city along the Ottawa River, is believed to have started in the home’s chimney around 9 a.m. Officials estimated damage at $300,000 to the structure and $100,000 to contents. The cause was determined to be accidental.

There were no injuries reported in these fires, either.
