Indie rockers Wintersleep are back, four years after their last release and three since their last tour, but they promise fans who may have thought they’d broken up that their new songs hearken back to their early days of their atmospheric alt rock, already hitting charts with their first single, Amerika. The album is released tomorrow so now is the chance to hear the entire album for the first time, live (though, no promises the great Geddy Lee, who plays bass on their song Territory, will be on hand.) March 3, 8 p.m., Ritual. $25+. spectrasconic.com
Country duo The Rifle & The Writer are back on stage with their friend, Slo’ Tom, after finally completing an album that was stalled four years ago. With a new name and new drive, the brother and sister have been working and touring without an album nor EP, but this January finally had the money and finished Flowers of Chance in Nashville. Expect a little more kick in their step at this show. March 3, 8:30 p.m., Zaphod’s. $6 at the door. zaphods.ca
So let’s talk about the dance options this Friday night:
Elation and exhaustion are almost guaranteed after a show from New Brunswick’s electro hip hop Radio Radio who are on tour, heading west and possibly south out of their fan stronghold with their new, all-English album. (Previously they sang in Acadian Chiac.) Their mantra is to get the whole world dancing and their intelligent and infectious dance tunes do just that. Enjoy, but remember: their shows sell out. With Alex Silas & the Subterraneans, March 4, 10 p.m, Ritual. $20. spectrasconic.com
Rumble is a deep resonant sound; it’s also a challenge between street thugs and both seem to fit the sound Dear Blackwolf rolls out over an audience when they perform. This is rock with a foot-stomping, gut moving awareness of the blues. They’re joined by equally popular and fascinating electro lo-riders The Heavy Medicine Band, and Brandon Allan. March 4, 9 p.m., Irene’s. $10.irenespub.ca
For a different kind of movement, comes concept band Lakes of Canada whose last album was a dystopic creation informed by Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. This may make them seem like dark, unfriendly sorts but this they most definitely are not; live, their big, almost-choral sound becomes invigorating, as is the obvious joy they have playing with each other. March 4, 8:30 p.m., The Black Sheep Inn. $10. theblacksheepinn.com
Saturday brings with it three treats:
First, minimalist rocker Graeme Kennedy has a punk, beat poet vibe, with a rough purr in his deep voice — think what would emerge if Nick Cave, Iggy Pop and a less-swaggery Billy Idol spawned offspring. It’s part poetic performance art, part teen-boy monotone, but it works, particularly with the strategic and limited musical instrumentation. I still haven’t stopped playing his songs. Fans may also like the synth, dark, heartbreak pop of Kennedy Cult (no relation?) playing on March 7. With Big Dream, The Tackies, Fathers of Modern Rocketry, March 5, 8 p.m., Zaphod’s. $8 in advance, $10 at the door. zaphods.ca
Charlotte Cornfield’s new album, Future Snowbird. c
For more charismatic deliciousness: Charlotte Cornfield, who calls herself a “song farmer,” plays folk rock experiments that are so earnest and somehow wrong they work, much like Neil Young. However, the unorthodox and addictive Cornfield is also aided by a surprisingly flexible and unerring vocal range, and geeky-references to the things we love: “If you were any more elusive, you’d be invisible, you are like Aslan.” Her first album, released in 2011 achieved critical success and now, after some time in NYC and a “vicious bout of psoriasis,” we are told, she has released Future Snowbird, that we think will appeal to both children and adults for its unabashed honesty (it is an all-ages show). With Isaac Vallentin, Trails, March 5, 8 p.m., Pressed.: $7 at the door.
The NAC show of Scottish turned Canadian David Francey sold out weeks in advance but, unknown to many, there is another show on Saturday (ssssh). The working class folk singer-songwriter is playing a smaller venue in Perth as part of a 50-show tour, including stops in the U.S. and Ireland. March 5, 7:30 p.m., St. Paul’s United Church. $25 at 613-485-6434 or ticketsplease.ca,
Sunday has its regularly unusual offerings: Hip hop and rap legend Krayzie Bone plays what may be his last solo show here. The rapper insists his album Chasing the Devil, Part III, out in November, is his last solo release, though he will continue to be a member of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony (with Bizzy Bone, Layzie Bone, Wish Bone and Flesh-N-Bone). As an aside, Bone is also part of a Kickstarter plan to preserve Hip Hop through a virtual museum, and is currently seeking donations. With Aspects, Swift Crew, C-Note, Made Wade, Ceerouse, Jcapcity, Dre@m, Dizzo, March 6, 9 p.m., The Bourbon Room. $25. www.ticketscene.ca
Lo-fi pop-country crooner Sean Conway and The Postmodern Cowboys have us perturbed: do we like them or not? This is inoffensive music played by a 1950s straight-laced, white boy with perfect hair, very tidy trumpet and sweet melody, (and not moving pelvis), but on the other hand, there is a kind of sophomoric, fuzzy garage element that might make it appealing. You decide. March 6, 9 p.m., The Rainbow. $5. therainbow.ca.
As antithesis: the British stadium rock band The Temperance Movement have opened for The Rolling Stones, and it shows. They are big, they are loud, they are fun and they are at Algonquin College for a very reasonable price. March 7, 7 to 11 p.m., The Observatory. $8/50-$13.50.
The Fast Romantics “rebirth” continues with their first single off their new album, to be released this summer. The former party band shift began after Kirty joined the songwriting team, adding a slight 60s pop element and now some synths. It has saved them from being just another Canadian indie-pop band, with the chance — and we’ll see with the new album — to veer towards The Pixies. They play with the astonishing dark pop (think Peter Murphy) of Kennedy Cult and Valois, March 9, 8:30 p.m., Zaphod’s. $10 at the door. spectrasonic.com
