A bail hearing opened in Gatineau court Thursday morning for Ismael Habib, 28, a Montrealer charged with threatening to kill his girlfriend whose passport, according to his lawyer, has been seized by the RCMP for security concerns.

Habib, with mid-length hair, a short beard and wearing glasses, sat quietly through the morning proceedings.

The proceeding was delayed this morning as court waited for the arrival of a couple described by the defence as Habib’s parents-in-law, who came from Montreal this morning.

Habib faces charges of uttering death threats, criminal harassment against his girlfriend, carrying a fake driver’s licence, and of possessing equipment to forge identification.

He is not charged with any terror offences, although his lawyer contends the RCMP seized his passport over fears he was planning to join jihadists in Turkey, and eventually in Syria.

“He was one of a group that was supposed to leave the country to join the jihadists over there (in Syria),” said defence lawyer Jacques Belley. “And so he was intercepted by the RCMP and they seized his passport.”

Belley could not confirm when the Mounties revoked his client’s passport, or what exact reason was given.

According to Belley, Habib’s girlfriend searched his tablet and discovered communications from another girlfriend living in Turkey.

“She was saying, ‘Why don’t you come here and join us … to kill people.’ Sorry about that, but that’s what was written,” Belley said.

Habib is from Montreal, but recently moved to Gatineau, and had been living with his girlfriend “for a couple of weeks” at an apartment, according to Belley.

The hearing continues Thursday afternoon.
