Tod Anderson, a mechanic in Manotick, has turned a Smart car into the perfect snowmobile thanks to inspiration from our Canadian weather.
Anderson came up with the idea for the car a couple of years ago and finally put his masterpiece together in November.
“It’s just a fitting thing for this kind of car,” says Anderson. “The car is just kind of made for (snowmobile conversion), being rear-engine and rear-wheel drive. I just had to try it out.”
Anderson built the car out of his garage with the help of friendly neighbours. It is fully functional and can reach up to 65 kilometres per hour.
“The only thing about it is that it’s not legal anywhere,” says Anderson. “So, you can’t drive it on the road.”
But you can take it out into fields and let it rip.
The tracks are from a side-by-side ATV, which Anderson adapted to fit the hubs of the Smart car. The skis were then designed and laser cut to fit the new and improved snowmobile.
Brock Wijnbeek, an Ottawa contractor, was driving in Manotick on Wednesday when he came across the car and took a picture of it. He later posted it to Reddit, titled “Only in Canada” and it quickly went viral.
The picture has since received over 2,000 Reddit upvotes and more than one hundred comments.
Anderson thinks the car looks pretty good.
