Cirque du Soleil has confirmed it’s in discussions with Windmill Development to set up a performance at the Zibi condo project site that will coincide with Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations in 2017.

Unlike Cirque’s show Toruk — The First Flight, which is coming to the Canadian Tire Centre this summer, the 2017 show will be under a temporary big top tent, similar to their 1998 show Saltimbanco held at LeBreton Flats.

“The discussions we had concerning the Windmill site is for the presentation of a big top show, where we need a site to set up our tent,” said Marie-Noëlle Caron, a media representative with Cirque du Soleil. “There is nothing confirmed as of yet concerning the Zibi site, so we unfortunately cannot give you any more information concerning this.”

Peter Stockdale, who represents the group Free the Falls, which opposes Zibi, Windmill’s billion-dollar condo development project planned for Chaudière Island, says the location in Gatineau they are considering is contested and sacred Indigenous land and should be wary of such plans.

He sent a letter to the Montreal-based entertainment company on Feb. 24 imploring them to consider moving the 2017 event to Jacques Cartier Park or LeBreton Flats.

A Windmill representative said they could not comment given the plans are “still all in the early stages of discussion.”

Four individuals, including architect Douglas Cardinal, have appealed the City of Ottawa’s rezoning of Chaudière and Albert Islands to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). The matter will return to Ontario Divisional Court on March 9 with a motion for leave to appeal the OMB’s dismissal of their original appeals.

“We wanted to make sure they realize that it is a bit more controversial than they possibly realized,” said Stockdale, who has yet to receive a response.
