Sled dogs plummeted down the tracks at Denis Rozon’s dog-sledding site north of Ottawa, carrying a special guest along the snowy trails.

U.S. Ambassador Bruce Heyman and members of the U.S. Embassy enjoyed sunny weather and rambunctious pooches as they held tightly to their sleds at Timberland Tours Dog Sled Adventures Saturday afternoon.

“Canadians just know how to enjoy winter and to make the best of everything,” Heyman said.

“This is one of those things that I just never conceived that I would be doing up here, and it was just so much fun.”

Heyman chose a three-month-old future sledding dog to name in honour of his visit.

“Ambassador” was his choice, appropriately.

U.S. Ambassador Bruce Heyman was at Timberland Tours in Bristol, an hour west of Gatineau, Saturday, March 5, 2016 to take a spin around the trails on a dog sled.

After 43 years of dog sledding, Rozon was excited to show off some of his prized racing possessions to his visitors.

One of these included a third-place trophy awarded to him after his first race in 1973.

Rozon trains dogs for racers from all over the world, and those who don’t make the cut sled with tourists instead.

Isabelle Collum said she enjoyed the ride.

“It was really fun,” she said. “I tripped and I fell a little bit, but that was OK because I followed the rules — I held on.”

Ray Bretzloff, an employee at the site, said the dogs run faster if you help them out.

“The general philosophy is if you do good for them, they’ll do good for you.

“And so it’s possible you hit a couple snowbanks on your way up and then maybe up a hill where you could’ve helped and you didn’t … and then they go on a silent strike.”

Bretzloff said sledders get the hang of it after a couple runs and the dogs run faster.

“It’s not because they can’t do it faster (off the start), it’s because now they’re, ‘Oh, I like this guy all right,’ and then they do a better job.”
