Ottawa police are probing a scam where fraudsters use stolen credit card data to buy items such as laptop computers online, then attempt to grab the items when they are delivered to the card holder’s address.

The Ottawa police’s organized fraud unit said victims’ credit card information is being used to make online purchases with deliveries to the victims’ addresses. The scammer then tries to intercept the delivery person or get the package from the homeowner later.

Police are warning the public to be on the watch for unexpected deliveries, and people sitting in cars in residential neighbourhoods for long periods of time and approaching delivery truck drivers.

They ask any suspicious people or vehicles be reported to police. Anyone who believes they’ve been victimized by the scam can report it to Ottawa Police at 613-236-1222, ext. 7300.
