It may have been the first time NHL Commish Gary Bettman walked into a room full of Canadians without getting at least a few boos.
Thursday’s much-ballyhooed State Dinner to fete Prime Minister Justin Trudeau featured a star-studded guest list of Canuck celebrities amid the bankers, business tycoons, Washington elite, and, yes, major league sport commissioners.
The prime minister brought along a cadre of key Cabinet ministers, and was joined by his wife, Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau, and mother, Margaret Trudeau, as guests of honour.
And while there were no Kim Cattrall sightings Thursday — much to the likely dismay of the 60 Minutes crew who mistakenly identified the Sex and the City star and former flame of Pierre Trudeau as the PM’s mother in a recent segment — there was a considerable contingent of Canadian A-list expats on the invite list.
Among the stars spotted at the gala were Michael J. Fox, Mike Myers, longtime Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels, Nepean’s own Sandra Oh, and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, along with his wife, Blake Lively.

A guest list published online by the Washington Post on Thursday evening had some of those names trending on social media, leading many in the Twitterverse to assume the worst.
“When people trend on Twitter I immediately assume they’re dead, so thanks for giving me a heart attack Mike Myers,” comedienne Lauren Mabbett wrote on Twitter, adding the hashtag, #MikeMyersisstillalive.
Other Tweeters shared less kind sentiments about the Toronto-born funnyman’s recent film career.
Despite rumours of reviving his Austin Powers characters for a fourth installment, Myers has rarely been seen on the silver screen in the past decade.

Bettman, who was invited along with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and NBA counterpart Adam Silver, is likely accustomed to the ribbing he routinely receives from Canadians — he is roundly booed in rinks across the country.
Myers and Fox are both avid hockey fans — though it should be noted Reynolds reportedly “hates” the sport, according to an Elle magazine cover story — but Bettman may have endured a cross-check or two from another notable Canadian with a deep connection to our national pasttime.
Trudeau’s ministerial entourage also included Liberal Party of Canada president Anna Gainey, daughter of Montreal Canadiens legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Bob Gainey.
