Aylmer Road will be closed for the morning as firefighters try to get control of what was a “huge” fire, says Gatineau police.

The fire began about 12:20 a.m. at 478 Aylmer Rd. in Gatineau in a large, stone building that had been the Saudi Arabian embassy. However, the house in the mostly residential part of town had been empty for years, said Gatineau police Lt. Patrick Vaillancourt.

Vaillancourt said emergency services were alerted to the fire when a neighbour called 9-1-1 saying she smelled and saw smoke, but was unable to identify the source. He said firefighters quickly identified the fire due to shooting flames.

Most of these were under control by 7 a.m., but fire crews anticipate they will be fighting the fire all morning.

Arson is suspected as the cause and police will be investigating, though Vaillancourt says there were no immediate signs of squatters.

He added that police have been called to the house on several occasions over the years it has been vacant, mostly to deal with forced entry or graffiti.

Aylmer Road was expected to remain closed in both directions from Victoire Beaudry Road to Golf Road for most of the morning. Detour signs have been placed to help commuters.

In Carlington, a fire in an attached townhome at 101 Fordham Pte just after 1 a.m. was quickly extinguished by Ottawa Fire Services.

In this case, neighbours also alerted emergency services to the fire located in the homes’ third floor.

No injuries were reported at either fire and victim services were providing help to those who had to evacuate.

Damages were yet to be estimated at either fire.
