“Go Redblacks go!”

To that deafening mantra, more than 100 young women — and a few young men — were put through their paces over the weekend during the Ottawa Redblacks cheerleading and dance auditions at the Delta Ottawa City Centre.

The hopefuls flashed wide smiles, excited to show off their stunting, cheering and tumbling skills as they vied to be among the 50 chosen for the squad.

“I woke up super early ’cause I was super excited,” said Monika Tremblay, adding that she’s been waiting a whole year to audition.

Tremblay, a second-year neuroscience student at Carleton University, said being a part of Carleton’s cheer team has helped her prepare for the audition.

“I really, really wanted to be on a CFL team so bad so I felt like taking the year just to prepare with like a bit of a smaller team but doing the same kind of stuff would kind of give me more experience to try something at this level.”

Lisa Aucoin, the director of the Ottawa Redblacks cheerleading and dance program, said she is looking for personality more than anything.

“You have to, of course, be able to cheer or dance. That’s going to get you on the team. But you also have to be a leader you have to be personable you have to be able to interact well with others,” Aucoin said. “I’m looking for organized committed people with positive attitudes that want to make a difference.”

Aucoin added there is much more to being a part of the team than entertaining the game day crowd.

“They’re not just these tremendous game day performers in flashy uniforms, these are kids or young adults that are in university or starting out their careers and for them to give back and to be active in the city is so important to us.”

Brittany Clarke, a recent graduate from the University of Ottawa, has been a member of the Redblacks cheer team since its first season.

“I just really want for the team — strong hardworking, athletic role models that are excited to be part of our family and I think that every year we get more and more of that talent coming out and I can’t wait for the season.”

Participants were to perform in public Sunday from 2-5 p.m. in the Nordstrom Court of the Rideau Centre.
