Hundreds of Ottawans headed out to the ByWard Market on Sunday to enjoy the sun and warm temperatures before bad weather hits on Monday.

The increased traffic made Market vendors extremely happy.

“It has been fabulous,” said Patricia Kilmartin, a vendor at Sandi’s Native Art. “We’ve been here since January, and we’ve been dealing with some really cold weather. The warm weather has really brought people out.”

Temperatures hit a high of 10 C on Saturday and 8 on Sunday. Forecast highs for the remainder of the week range from 4 on Monday to 10 on Tuesday, but there is a chance of rain each day through Saturday.

Monday could be especially nasty. A special weather statement is in effect for the Ottawa region, with freezing rain expected early, turning to rain later in the morning.

But on Sunday it was all about enjoying the sunshine and everything that goes along with it, including out-of-season comforts such as fried dough and sugar. Stephanie Bouthillier, 30, shared beavertails with three little ones.

“Oh, my God, it’s so good!” said Madyson, her five-year-old daughter.

“We had a couple of errands to run, so I thought, ‘Why not park and walk to get them done?’ ” said Bouthillier. “Since the canal closed so early, we never had a chance to get our traditional beavertail.

“This is the warmest it’s been while eating a beavertail with snow still on the ground.”

Many lined up for the traditional winter treat, while some traded in their beavertails for beer. Yes, folks, patio season is upon us.

Ken Blair, 31, lives a short distance from the Lowertown Brewery on York Street in the Market. He enjoyed his first patio beer of the season.

“It’s great out. It’s beautiful,” he said. “Living in the Market, going to a patio is a daily occurrence.”
