The Quyon ferry opened for business Thursday — its second-earliest opening ever — as ice continues to recede from the region’s lakes and rivers.
Traffic is light for the moment, owner Don McColgan said, so the ferry won’t be running yet on its normal scheduled of one departure every 10 minutes.
“We go on demand. If a car comes, we’ll go,” he said.
Ice conditions allowed the early opening, he said, “and with the new ferry we can get out a little earlier.”
The three-year-old ferry is heavier than previous boats, and it can go through some ice.
Last year the ferry didn’t open until April 17 because of the long, cold winter. Its earliest opening was March 14, 1988.
The Quyon ferry connects the Fitzroy Harbour area of Ottawa with Quyon across the Ottawa River.
