Uber has asked its drivers to stop picking people up from the Ottawa International Airport starting at 2 a.m. Friday.

A notice to Uber drivers sent from headquarters Thursday afternoon says the company is “making changes to the pickup experience” at the airport.

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause you, but we are committed to resuming operations as soon as possible with a better experience for riders and drivers,” the notice says.

However, Uber drivers can still drop people off at the airport.

The decision might have roots in City Hall’s review of the taxi bylaw. A report is expected in two weeks outlining ways to change the bylaw. Staff have been forced to consider how to fold alternative ride-ordering services, like Uber, into the regulations.

Airport spokeswoman Krista Kealey said Uber drivers technically haven’t been permitted to pick up people from the airport since it’s not an “authorized service.” Only cabs that are dispatched by Coventry Connections have the curbside access to fares. The airport is talking with Uber about how to go forward, Kealey said.

Kealey said the airport is preparing for what the city might do with the taxi regulations.

“We’re just anticipating what’s going to be happening,” Kealey said, adding that the airport doesn’t “want to be caught off guard.”

Kealey said there is a “ton of taxi service” at the airport.
