Coventry Connections, the largest cab company in Ottawa, believes a smartphone application called eCab will give customers all the things they currently like about Uber, including an automatic transaction at the destination.
Coventry, which will link the eCab app to its Blueline and Capital taxi fleets, has been working on the integration for nearly a year, said Coventry president Hanif Patni.
The eCab app will be available in Ottawa starting Thursday.
When it comes to payment, eCab, developed by French company Taxis G7, will work similarly to Uber. The app will automatically bills customers’ credit cards after the ride. However, Patni said if people prefer to pay the driver, that will still be an option.
Like Uber, eCab lets people order a taxi by a tapping a button and it tracks the vehicle on a map. There’s also a rating system for the ride.
There will be no extra charge to order a conventional taxi through eCab. Patni said pre-booking a taxi with an eCab+ option will come with a $10 booking charge.
Patni predicted eCab will be the preferred ride app because it links people to properly insured cabs. Inadequate insurance is one of the biggest knocks against Uber, although the insurance industry is starting to create ride-sharing coverage for Uber drivers. The City of Ottawa’s taxi bylaw requires cabs to have commercial and general liability insurance.
The taxi partnership with eCab, which is also available in Toronto and Vancouver, is the latest maneuver in the heated ride-ordering war on Ottawa streets. Uber’s arrival in October 2014 has thrown the local cab industry, and city hall, a curveball. The international company doesn’t require its drivers to have municipal taxi permits to drive in Ottawa and cabbies are furious Uber continues to thrive in this city.
The city is poised to make changes to the taxi bylaw that could suggest a regulatory system for alternative ride-ordering services like Uber. Council’s community and protective services committee will consider a staff report April 7, with the recommendations expected to be published a week before the meeting.
