The snow Tuesday night didn’t amount to much, but Environment Canada is warning of bigger and stormier things to come — likely 10 to 15 centimetres of snow — starting Wednesday night and into Friday.

We’re likely to get some ice pellets too as the storm winds down. Most of the action is expected to happen Thursday.

As usual during this El Niño winter, the source is a mass of wet air blowing up from the southwest, and again the weather office says the amount of precipitation will vary from place to place.

The details:

The storm “is expected to bring significant amounts of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain to the regions. Winter storms like these typically bring 20 to 30 centimetres of snow to areas that receive only snow,” while others areas will get less snow but rain or ice pellets mixed in, the weather office says.

“There is some uncertainty in the exact track of the low. This will affect how much snow and freezing precipitation will fall at any particular location. Latest indications suggest most of Eastern Ontario will receive at least 10 to 15 cm of snow, and then a period of ice pellets and freezing rain which could last several hours.”

Environment Canada concludes that “travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.”

The forecast also calls for winds of 40 km/h gusting to 60 km/h on Thursday morning.

The outlook for the weekend is more like spring: Highs of 8C and some sunshine on both Saturday and Sunday.
