Ottawa and Gatineau police issued 79 tickets Tuesday as a result of ramped up enforcement to crack down on distracted driving.
“The number wasn’t surprising … given the amount of resources we had attached to it,” said Const. Tommy Jellinek of the Ottawa Police Service’s east traffic division.
Despite the high number of tickets issued, Jellinek said he was pleased no motorists were observed using handheld devices on major highways such as the 417 and 174.
“Later on when we got into more urban areas where there is stop-and-go traffic, that’s when we started to see the cell phones come out and people getting back on them.”
According to Jellinek, it was drivers on these smaller streets that pushed the number to 79. The tickets were issued as part of the Leave the Phone Alone campaign.
All the tickets were for driving while using a handheld communication device, which carries with it a $490 fine along with three demerit points.
“It’s a very significant fine but it lends to how important the issue of distracted driving is,” he said.
