An inmate at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre who had been reportedly complaining for days about feeling unwell collapsed at the jail and later died at hospital Tuesday.
The 59-year-old inmate was in his cell at about 10 a.m. when he went into cardiac arrest, according to paramedics. CPR was started, but by the time paramedics arrived, the man had no vital signs. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died.
Ottawa police said they attended the Innes Road jail and nothing about the man’s collapse was considered suspicious.
A spokesman for the ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, which runs the jail, would not comment on the circumstances of the death.
“As you can appreciate, with the police, coroner and Ministry performing investigations, it would be inappropriate to provide any details related to this incident,” said Brent Ross in a statement.
If the death is deemed to be the result of anything other than natural causes, under Ontario law the coroner will call an inquest. However, if the death is deemed to be the result of natural causes, the coroner can still choose to call an inquest at their discretion.
