The City of Ottawa releases its proposal to reform municipal taxi regulations Thursday afternoon.
The challenge for city staff is finding the sweet spot for integrating alternative ride services, like Uber, into the oversight system.
Uber drivers who don’t have taxi licences and plates have been operating illegally in Ottawa, but the demand for Uber is strong in the capital.
On the other hand, cabbies argue Uber has been draining money from a taxi industry that’s playing by the city’s rules.
The city hired KPMG to recommend ways to change the taxi bylaw. KPMG’s final report, which hasn’t been released, was expected to inform the city’s approach to creating a new taxi regime.
The recommendations released Thursday will be up for debate at a community and protective services meeting April 7. A final council vote is scheduled for April 13.
