A Kingston man has been charged by police after medical staff at a local hospital reported severe injuries on a three-month-old baby boy.

Police say that the hospital alerted child welfare authorities on Wednesday after they treated the child for multiple bone fractures. Kingston police were subsequently notified and detectives from the sexual assault and child abuse unit were called in.

The investigation showed that the mother had left the child in the care of its father, her husband, for a few hours. Police say that when she returned she noticed the boy was crying when she put him to bed, but didn’t recognize the seriousness of his injuries until the next morning. She immediately brought him to hospital.

The boy’s condition is stable.

Detectives interviewed both parents and arrested the father for aggravated assault on Wednesday. He was taken into custody and spent the night in cells. He was scheduled for a bail hearing on Thursday.
